Fat Wreck Chords Presents - Survival of the Fattest

GLENDALE, CA (YIFTM) - So much surrounds this album. Acting as both the foundation of my musical interests and a pop-punk ticket into the past, the Fat Wreck Chords’ release, Survival of the Fattest like no other album can be credited as the “seed that grew into a tree”, albeit an eclectic tree that definitely needs watering, but a tree none-the-less. This tree harbors branches that contain all of my punk interests (excluding 2 bands: Operation Ivy & Beastie Boys), either by those directly attributed to this album, or by bands revealed by bands on this album (then later on by bands revealed by bands revealed by bands on this album).

Now, it must be said in order for me to maintain a clear conscious, that these bands reigned supreme from the years 1996-2001. Acting as my personal soundtrack throughout my last 2 years of high school and my years at MATC, these bands would resemble that of a cane, helping an elderly individual to walk. Looking back, I really don’t know why I got so into music, but I can’t take that part of my life back, and if I did I don’t’ know what I’d replace it with.

This subject can, and disserves a much, much longer article as I can trace about 75% of my music back to this single album. I’ll save you all from that torture, even though for myself it must be told, and I must be the one to tell it. That article will come sometime later. You’ve been warned.

Anyway (Sap Town 24 miles away, for those of you unfamiliar with the Sap Town reference, check out GW’s first article on this site) today we celebrate, for no particular reason, the following bands that I, perhaps more than I should have, spent 6 years of my life corrupting my ears with: NOFX, Lagwagon, Propagandhi, Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, Frenzel Rhomb, Diesel Boy, Snuff, Strung Out, and No Use For A Name.
