Henderson Joins Mets Coaching Staff
NEW YORK - Future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson is now officially part of the Mets coaching staff. Current hitting coach, Rick Down, was released Thursday seemingly due to the lack of productivity from Mets hitters. It is unclear as to the exact role Henderson will assume on manager Willie Randolph's staff, but his presence will no doubt permeate throughout the clubhouse.
Henderson has been a mentor of sorts to current All-Star Jose Reyes, and has instructed the entire ball club on the merits of sound basestealing, patience at the plate, and referring to oneself only in the third person.
"Rickey's theory that Rickey will try to impart on these young guys is to put the bat on the ball and to hit the ball into places on the baseball diamond that the fielders will not be able to catch the ball," Henderson commented. "That always worked for Rickey."
This is the first coaching position for the 48 year old Henderson since his retirement in 2003 - a fact that Henderson himself has yet to acknowledge.
"Rickey has not ever said Rickey is retired from baseball. This old man still has gas left in the tank and if you divide 48 by 2, what do you get? You get 24 which is the number Rickey wears on the back of his New York Mets baseball jersey!"
Asked to clarify what the hell that statement meant, Henderson replied, "I am the greatest."
