Kane Reigns

MADISON, WI - The American Film Institute has just updated its "100 Years, 100 Movies" best of list. The original rankings were issued 10 years ago and topping the list again to no one's surprise is Citizen Kane. What is surprising is the amount of flip-flopping from numbers 2-100.

Perhaps riding the blood soaked wave of The Departed, Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull rightfully occupies the number 4 slot (up from 24.) And speaking of great directors, Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo ascends near the top of the bell tower (61 to 9.)

Other big leaps include Chaplin's City Lights (76 to 11) and John Ford's The Searchers (96 to 12.) How on earth either of these two films were rated that low is beyond me. Thankfully the AFI has regained some of it's senses.

However one glaring omission remains: Robert Rodriguez' Desperado is no where to be found.

The complete list can be accessed here: http://www.afi.com/

Charles Foster Kane.

It looks as though you've got your rosebud back GWagner.

Hey heatbox, is Kane in your top 10?

You should have named this article, "Charles Foster Reigns".

Then I would have liked you.

I'm glad the AFI had the time to re-evaluate the list. We don't have enough meaningless "Best of..." lists.

no. just meaningless posts conceived by hennessy.

Look for new release Special Edition DVD's of all the films that made a jump.

Marketing.

Can I reserve my copies now?

It was great to have Peter Bogdonavich, the great Tim Allen, and Larry Fishburn around to tell me what makes a great movie.

And yes--if it doesn't say "SPECIAL EDITION" this fool won't recognize it.
I need strokefest featurettes. Commentaries by Peter Bogdonavich reminising about his boy Orson Welles.

Kind of hard to take a list seriously that does not include Rules of the Game, Tokyo Story, Rashomon, Battleship Potemkin, Sunrise, 8 1/2, Seven Samurai, etc.

Where is Shrek 3 on this list?

Matthew said...

Have you seen Shrek 3? Get a good pen ready to sign my copy in a few weeks.

...of the soundtrack.

JDot said...

Yeah. See if you can get that soundtrack at Half Price.

No Rocket on it.

Or Refused.

Matthew said...

You blew it on that one.

I tried to get Simon and Garfunkel in there. (Bookends Theme)

No dice.

You should have suggested all the songs sequenced exactly the same from the Shrek 2 soundtrack.
